Miru Kim

I discovered a new photographer today while I was watching some videos on TED.  Check out TED if you haven't.  It is awesome videos that I use a lot in my classroom but in general just make you think.  So I thought I would feature Miru Kim who takes pictures in various abandon buildings with herself naked in the picture.  Her stuff is so beautiful yet so foreign to me.  And what a wonderful play on man's role in society and how instrumental and insignificant we can be.  I really dig it.

Eric Lafforgue

My new favorite Photographer:  Erik Lafforgue
It's funny because I don't really consider myself a photographer.  I am really more of a drawer and a painter but I do find myself drawn to photographers more than anything else.  I think it has to do with the idea of documentation.  I think photography is magical in the sense that you are capturing a moment in time that will never happen again.  I came across this photographer a few weeks ago and have been drawn into the beautiful images of people around the world.  He does an amazing job of breaking down the human condition.  Some of his subjects are so foreign and so different but feel so incredibly familiar at the same time.

Francesca Woodman

Last week I introduced my favorite photographer, Francesca Woodman, to my photography class. We are entering the last part of the school year so I am giving out final projects and the kid's is self portraits. She is a Colorado born artist who suffered from depression and committed suicide when she was 22. I had a lot of interesting reactions from my students. I just can't help but understand exactly what she feeling and communicating. Depression is a powerful thing. Of course I don't tell the kids that is why I find her so interesting. I also don't show the boobie pics.
